Scarlett strong

Hello, My Daughter’s name is Scarlett Rae Kirkbride. My name is Lindsey & her Father is Tyler. Our beautiful daughter was born on October 9th, 2021 & was the healthiest baby girl up until October 23rd, 2022 when our lives changed forever. After a fever that was on & off that lasted well over a week with our Doctors office thinking it was from her recent 1 year vaccines we didn’t think anything of it. Shortly after, she began to become very swollen & just overall not acting like herself. We had the gut feeling we had to bring her in to see her doctor & her doctor agreed this was no longer looking like side effects from her vaccines. When we got to her doctors office she said she wanted to get lab work at the hospital & evaluate her overnight. As soon as we got her labs they came back critical for extremely high white blood count & potassium. Thinking it wasn’t valid labs since she was functioning so well we repeated them. Shortly after, Our Pediatrician came in from home to see the labs herself. They were indeed correct & what she seen under the microscope she instantly knew it looked like leukemia. She came in with a look on her face that we just knew something was very wrong. She sat down next to us with tears filling in her eyes & told us the words you never want to hear as a parent. “I think Scarlett has leukemia & she needs to be life flighted right now to children’s because her labs are critical. Little did we know life flight was currently on the way with an actual doctor on it that took my place in the helicopter because of how critical Scarlett was. Most of that night is a blur but once we got to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh later that morning on October 24th, 2022 it was confirmed our 12 month old daughter had T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia & her bone marrow was almost 100% full of cancer. Shortly after, we found out this type of leukemia was very rare for Scarlett’s age so genetic testing was sent out. They also started treatment right away as this cancer was very aggressive. Many months later with so many complications like chicken pox, seizure, methotrexate toxicity, Gi bleed, septic shock, pneumatosis intestinalis, cdiff, blood sugar issues, mucositis, neuro issues, ect. We still couldn’t get her in remission. So, after yet another bone marrow biopsy that showed she still had cancer our doctor sat us down & said if we wanted to we could take her home to spend as much time left that we had with her. I still look back to that day & get chills as I hear those words again. I still believed with every fiber of my being that God was going to heal her & I wasn’t quitting on her. A week later, Our doctor came to us with a chemo that had never been given at Upmc children's hospital of Pittsburgh. It wasn't even to treat her type of cancer but Adult Multiple Myeloma. It was called Daratumumab. Only a handful of kids had been given it for scenerios like scars & but was promising. After that round we finally got her to 0.01% of MRD left in her bone marrow. She finally qualified for bone marrow transplant after spending almost a year in the hospital. We truly spent every single holiday admitted but the staff became nothing short of family to us. Scarlett received her life saving Bone Marrow Transplant on June 15th, 2023 & a month later we found out our baby girl was finally MRD negative & the transplant was a success. It is now May 2025 & we have a healed & healthy 3 year old girl. We couldn’t have got through it without God, our family/friends, her medical team & the support of each & every person that helped us along the way. We will forever be grateful for the love & strong faith everyone had in God to heal our precious daughter. The prayers never stopped coming our way & that’s what truly got us through the hardest time in our lives. ❤

I will be joining thousands of others in my community and across the world in support of a movement to advance pediatric health care for kids and families in need.
